How to Avoid Fake Pokemon Cards

Counterfeit cards vary in quality, so there is no single test that catches every fake without risking damage. The safest approach combines an exact reference card, clear photographs, seller evidence and protected payment.
Do not tear, bend or deliberately damage a card to test it. Destructive online tricks can ruin a genuine card and are not a substitute for expert authentication.
Check the listing first
- Price far below comparable genuine cards
- Only stock images for an expensive card
- Blurry or cropped photos
- Seller refuses a timestamped front and back image
- Pressure to pay by bank transfer or leave the platform
Compare with the exact printing
Use a trusted image of the same set, number, language and variant. Compare text, symbols, borders, copyright line, typefaces and layout. Differences between legitimate eras and print runs mean that comparing with a random Pokemon card can mislead you.
Inspect print and finish
Look for incorrect colours, fuzzy text, unusual gloss, missing texture, poor foil behaviour and inconsistent alignment. Treat any single sign as a reason to investigate, not final proof on its own.
Take extra care with graded cards
Check the certification number on the grader's official service where available and compare the label details with the card. A valid number alone does not prove the slab in front of you is genuine, so inspect the holder and listing provenance too.
What to do when uncertain
Ask for more evidence or walk away. For an expensive purchase, seek an experienced collector, reputable shop or authentication service. Keep all messages and payment on a platform with a documented dispute process.
